The rollercoaster ends today
Long story short, today I will stop my sports betting addiction after losing 1500$ on a single day, while being part of the small minority of gamblers that have made a profit. It all started a few months before the end of 2019 when I had discovered the churning/manufactured spending hobby and I thought, since I used to watch a lot of sports, I could deposit a few thousand $ for the cashback at the local betting website, make a sure bet with low odds and then withdraw it. So I did that, made some 1.01 bets on basketball for a few dozen and guess what, it worked. I gradually upped the bets to a few hundreds to several thousands on matches where the top team played against the worse teams, normally games with 30-40 points difference. I figured out I could manufacture spend 5000 a month like that. But since it seemed so easy to win those bets, why not bet them multiple times to win a few additional $ per month? So I started betting more, now also on football and volleyball. Until my first big loss, while being on the website looking for my next bet, saw Ajax winning by 3 goals against Chelsea and betting still open for 1.02 profit. So I bet 950, and before you know it, 2 players from Ajax get sent off with red card and the game ends 4-4. In the next few weeks I place some riskier bets to chase losses and luckily I win, while in the meantime losing another 300$ on a football match. But 2019 ends with 40$ profit, plus a few hundred for credit card rewards. I keep the same strategy in 2020, some big bets on basketball and volleyball, plus some small bets on live football. I win some and lose some, but am overall 100-200 ahead until covid happens and the matches stop for a few weeks. When some championships restart, with a lot of time at home, I start betting on live football, again on ‘sure’ bets. After some wins the second big loss comes. I lose 40, then bet 300 to recover a bit of the loss, then 900 to start recovering the second loss, lose all three bets, 1240 total loss. After the shock, and a few days later, I set a goal to keep playing until I recover the losses or I lose another thousand. So I start betting again hundreds, and when I got confident even thousands, on live football ‘sure’ bets. Luckily it works again, and in the next 2-3 months until the end of the season I managed to recover all losses and end up with a few hundred profits. But since it seems to work and bad times have passed why stop? So I keep playing in the next season and I end 2020 with a profit of around 4000$, around 1000-1500$ in each of the last three months. Since I have found a way to win easy money I naturally keep playing in 2021, although I realize more and more that I need to stop because I spend tons of hours on this. And just in 2-3 few weeks I had won almost 1600$ in 2021 until yesterday, when I lost 900$ on football, bet on Tottenham scoring up to 2 goals in the final 5 minutes, they scored 3. I commit to either recovering profits or ending this for all without any losses in 2021. I make a bet for 600$, I win 12$, make another 600$bet on a South American match with teams I had never heard of, the wrong team scores on 99th minute and I lose. Total loss for the day 1500$, total win for 2021 70$. With previous losses, even 100$, I was angry or sad. But with this one the feeling is different, kind of numb, kind of relieved that it ended. And here are my thoughts. I’ve read that only 5% of gamblers win with sports betting, and I am part of that 5%. But reality that no more than 0.5% make anything to remotely allow them to make a living. The rest, including me, make much lower than the minimum wage of even the crappiest job, while spending a lot more energy. I would spend more than 20 hours a week, 8 hours at each weekend day. And all that for tiny profits. Last summer I planned to get back home from the beach just in time to follow the matches to recover my second loss instead of allowing myself to enjoy the day. That should never happen next summer. In all that time I spent gambling I could have improved my skills and looked for a better job, which is one of the reasons why I started sports betting since I’m very bored and relatively underpaid. Fact is, you can never win with sports betting. Unlike lottery or scratches where you usually realize that the probabilities are tiny but you might get a big win that will change your life. But with sports betting you can only win relatively small amounts, which you will naturally further bet because with each win you get more confident and you feel that you are leaving money on the table otherwise. Even if I made 100000$ with sports betting I’m sure that I would bet more to reach 200000$ And as everyone here knows, with gambling you completely lose the value of money, especially when you win. I’m very frugal in real life, even though I’m relatively affluent. 1500$ is more than my yearly grocery spending but I lost that in just a few hours. So now I commit to withdraw all money from the website and never make another deposit. And also cancel my credit cards with annual fees, since manufactured spending is also not worth the time in Europe as the rewards are much worse than US. I’ve earned around 4000$ from this shit but I lost tons of hours and energy, so this comes to an end, lesson learned.
Welcome to the Summer Transfer Megathread 2020! Here you can discuss rumours, confirmed transfers and also which player you personally would want to sign and how you would like to integrate them into the squad. Of course transfer rumours can still be posted as their own separate posts but you are free to post them in here as well. I will keep this updated as new rumours come in, but only those sources that mention us directly. If you believe a rumour should be added, just PM me or post them down in the comments. NOTE: These are PREDICTIONS based on speculation. I have no inside info. This is not a leak of any sort, nor am I pretending otherwise. The next big promo should be the CL/EL live cards, which were released in early November in FIFA 19. A few things that I noticed about last year's set:
19/21 players released were from top 5 leagues (EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue One, and Serie A).
There were a couple very high-rated players (Griezmann and Aguero), but the top-level meta players (i.e. Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Mbappe) were excluded.
Most of the cards included were meta-friendly mid-level cards from easily linkable nationalities.
There were no clashes with OTW, for obvious reasons. This means you can likely rule out people who already have an OTW such as Felix, Pulisic, Brandt, and both Hazards.
With that in mind, here are some rough predictions for what we might see: ATALANTA - Muriel seems like a decent shout for a usable low-rated card with meta appeal. Papu Gomez is a strong candidate. ATLETICO - There are a few reasonable candidates. I'm going to say Lemar because he has decent stats and a strong nationality. Hermoso and Saul seem like reasonable possibilities as well. BARCA - You can make a case for numerous Barca players, as there are many who fit the criteria of being appealing with good nationalities. I have no strong prediction here, apart from that I don't think it will be Messi (the card is already too good). BAYERN - As with Barca, you can make a case for almost any Bayern player, as a lot of them meet the criteria. I have no strong prediction here. CHELSEA - I think Willian and Rudiger make the most sense, given base card stats, appeal, and nationality. DORTMUND - I think it's going to be Sancho. Hype card with a lot of appeal. Good nationality for hybrids and crossover appeal. My second choice would be Witsel, who is also quite good and can be slotted into some hybrids. INTER - Lautaro Martinez already has a very good IF and really makes the most sense in terms of appeal, nationality, and potential. If they want to go with more of a discard-level sleeper then I could see Barella. JUVENTUS - Dybala would make a lot of sense as the top card in the promo, being a high-rated player with pretty good stats, yet obvious flaws. He's very similar to Griezmann from last year. Pace in the 80s and 3 star WF to keep him from being too OP. If they opt to do a lower rated player, I'd tab Douglas Costa as the next best bet. Strong nationality, high pace, and 5 star skills give him a lot of appeal, and with his low shooting he certainly needs the upgrades. LEVERKUSEN - If they get one, it almost has to be one of the Germans: Havertz, Tah, or Bellarabi. Leverkusen are in bad shape in the group, so may get passed over. LIVERPOOL - This is a tricky one. They could go with Salah or Mane as one of the promo's headliners, but their stats might already be too good. Last year both of the headliners were sub 90 pace players on the fringes of the meta. VVD is unlikely because his NIF is too good. I'll say TAA, Gomez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wijnaldum, and Robertson are the strongest possibilities. LEIPZIG - There's not much to get excited about here because most of their stars have unappealing nationalities. If they get one, I'll say Forsberg, Gulacsi, or one of the French CBs are the best bet. LILLE - They truly have nobody who would be a pack mover. Maybe Sanches gets in again with a big boost. LYON - Depay, Mendes, and Aouar really seem like the only cards that would create demand. MANCHESTER CITY - Aguero was in Screams and Silva is a dead card for FUT, so they're not likely. Laporte is probably too "meh" to warrant inclusion over more exciting CB candidates from other clubs. I think you have four good candidates here: Bernardo, Sane, Cancelo, and Mahrez. Cancelo was omitted from OTW and would be a very appealing card. Sane would have a lot of appeal and strong hybrid value. Those two are probably most likely. NAPOLI - The strong contenders here are Mertens (too good?), Fabian, and Allan. Koulibaly's nationality is tough. The same is true for Manolas, and his card is already very, very strong. PSG - I feel confident saying that it won't be Neymar or Mbappe because their cards are already too good. Beyond that, it's tough to narrow it down. They have a number of strong players who would be great with some boosts. I lean towards Marquinhos, but could see Di Maria, Herrera, Paredes, or Bernat. REAL MADRID - Do we get a Militao? Isco? Ramos or Marcelo? Those cards all have a chance, IMO. TOTTENHAM - Eriksen would make sense as a headliner whose stats aren't so good that he'd become too OP with upgrades, but the nationality is a problem. Sissoko is an option, but the Ndombele OTW may discourage them from another French CM from Spurs. I'd probably place my bets on Lucas Moura, which would be crazy expensive. VALENCIA - Guedes, Rodrigo, and Gaya are the best bets here, IMO. Beyond that, I would expect 2-3 players from smaller leagues. Look for someone from Ajax or Benfica. Van De Beek? Neres? Grimaldo? Rafa? If they're going to go outside the big leagues, it has to be a good player who can slot into hybrids.

And now onto the slightly less attractive (but will still do the job after a couple of pints) siblings, the Europa League RTTF cards. Again, these are only for teams who have competed in the Round of 16. Mathieu (Sporting Lisbon), Milinkovic-Savic (Lazio), Tah (Bayer Leverkusen) and Hamsik (buggered off to the Chinese Super League) said bye-bye in previous rounds and are no longer in the competition or eligible for upgrade.

FAQ's Will there be any more cards added? Your guess is as good as mine. But we all know EA love money and nothing else to give us more exciting content to keep us docile and submissive engaged! Praise be to our benevolent overlords! :D How come some of the upgrades don't make sense? You can thank Winter Upgrades for that. Huh? Here, read this. My guy missed a game or two. Will he still get the upgrade? Football is a team game, son. You bet your ass he'll get that upgrade. When can I expect my TOTGS cards to be upgraded? You can't. Unlucky. When are the quarter finals? The draw will take place on Friday 15th March. The week beginning April 8th will host the first legs, while the second legs will be played the week of April 15th. Any shameless plugs this week, Dav? A couple. The mod team's Community Feedback Poll is still ongoing, and the voting is pretty close at the moment. You never know, your vote could be the one that sways a category. Also, which I'm well buzzing about, we're opening up memes back into the sub. Check that post here. But I have another question... can I make a new thread entirely for my one, single, solitary question or is there somewhere else - perhaps like a larger thread that covers a wider topic - one that may be full of information related to the topic, that I could ask it in? ..... sigh. And on that note...

Dutch FA give advantage to Ajax
Few people would have predicted a Tottenham v Ajax semi-final at the start of this season's Champions League, but both sides are unquestionably here on merit, and no-one can complain about either getting easy draws. Tottenham have eliminated Dortmund and Manchester City in the knockout stages, while Eric ten Hag's side have won away at Real Madrid and Juventus. Neither side should have any fears about competing on this stage. The side have had very different preparations for this week's first leg. While Tottenham looked exhausted in a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham - their first loss at their new ground - Ajax were give the weekend off in order to help them prepare for this tie. With both sides preferring to play a high-energy pressing game, that could prove crucial. Ajax, incidentally, have come on particularly strong in the second halves at both Real and Juventus.
Ajax overloads
In some ways, this is a classic Ajax side - good possession play, heavy pressing, 4-3-3, some promising graduates from the youth system. But in other ways there are differences: there are a couple of expensive signings in this side, and the key tactical concept from their performances against Real and Juve was bringing one of the wingers inside to overload the opposite flank, in stark contrast from their traditional approach of stretching play down both flanks. This has generally involved attacking consistently down the right flank. Dusan Tadic drops off into a position between the lines but usually drifts towards the right, from where he regularly combines with right-winger Hakim Ziyech, who cuts inside and shoots dangerously. The real problem, though, comes from the fact that left-sided David Neres doesn't remotely stay on the left flank, and inside moves across to overload the right, this could cause Spurs, and Danny Rose in particular, serious problems and the England man could be a value bet to be shown a card if you can get around 4.00.
De Jong to pull the strings
In midfield, Donny van de Beek doesn't get the praise of some of his fellow youngsters but plays a crucial role in leading the press and breaking forward to the edge of the box. Lasse Schone plays an all-action role to the right, leaving Barcelona-bound Frenkie de Jong to sit deep, control play and sometimes drop back into the back four too.
[OC] From Asensio to Ziyech: The Dutch Players going to the 2018 FIFA World Cup
So, you may have noticed what with the amazing previews, but the Netherlands isn’t going to the World Cup this year, what with having sucked for the past 4 years or so. Oranje will now have to swallow their pride once again and try to to support our neighbors Belgium or Germany after missing a major tournament for the second time in a row. That or or support underdogs Iceland because that’s always fun. Of course, its not like all Dutch people are staying. In fact, there’s a bunch of Dutch players going to the World Cup after all, and not just the usual suspects (though they obviously will also get a shout-out). With all the World Cup squads confirmed, a grand total of 10 Dutch players and one manager will be going and representing the nation in different colors. Yeah, not quite enough to make a full squad, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.
MANAGER: Bert van Marwijk
Dutch national team: 1 cap as player, 52 as manager
Let’s get started with the manager who just so happens to coach a different country. Van Marwijk famously led the Dutch national team between 2008 and 2012, where he managed to take us to the 2010 World Cup Final, with Casillas’ toe all that kept us from winning it all. It all fell apart in 2012, crashing out of the group stage and deciding to leave despite signing a contract that would’ve kept him in charge until 2016. After a brief stint at HSV, he ended up managing the Saudi Arabia National team, qualifying them for the World Cup for the first time since 2006. Despite that achievement, he was quickly sacked after refusing to live in the country. Not too long after, the Saudi FA came back for him after things didn’t work out with his replacement Edgardo Bauza. Van Marwijk declined, and is going to the World Cup with Australia, after Ange Postecoglou left the job after qualifying. He’ll also take his son-in-law Mark van Bommel with him as his assistent.

KARIM EL AHMADI
Current club: Feyenoord Rotterdam
Position: Defensive midfielder
Connection: Born in Enschede
Dutch national team: No caps
The first of many Dutch born players to end up playing for the Atlas Lions instead, El Ahmadi is one of the more experienced internationals in the team, having been a international since 2008 and amassing 48 caps. He chose Morocco early on in his career, being part of the 2005 Morocco u-20 World Cup squad held in…. The Netherlands. His career has seen mainly seen him be a part of Feyenoord, through both the good (champions in just under 2 decades) and the very, very bad (10-0). The Feyenoord captain will be expected to fill a similar leadership role at the national team.
NORDIN AMRABAT
Current club: Leganes (loaned from Watford )
Position: Winger
Connection: Born in Naarden
Dutch national team: 7 U-21 caps
Nordin Amrabat has been a staple for the Moroccan team for a while now, currently having 41 caps. When Amrabat initially played for the Netherlands U-21 (and was back-up for the 2008 Olympic team), he was initially not allowed to switch, a decision which he regretted at the time because of the lack of oppurtunities at the Dutch national team. However, FIFA changed the rules so that switching was still possible, which Amrabat eventually did in 2011. While his Eredivisie career was disappointing, with an amazing season at VVV countered by not managing to break through at PSV. Afterwards, he’s been a bit journeyman, playing for clubs like Galatasaray, Malaga and Watford (he was even their record signing at one point) with mixed, but mostly positive results.
SOFYAN AMRABAT
Current Club: Feyenoord Rotterdam
Position: Midfielder
Connection: Born in Huizen
Dutch national team: 4 U-15 caps
Nordin’s younger brother. Whilst he’s played some caps for the Netherlands U-15, he very quickly decided to switch his allegiance to Morocco. Part of FC Utrecht’s youth academy, he went to Feyenoord for around 4 million euros and impressed in the early parts of the season. So much so that then Dutch manager Dick Advocaat tried to court Sofyan into switching allegiance to Oranje. While he already had regularly been in the Morocco squad, he had yet to play in an official match, making it still possible. However, Advocaat’s lack of future at the KNVB made him decide to go with Morocco after all. Since then, his form dipped, but Morocco manager Hevre Renard has an obvious liking for the player.
MARCO ASENSIO
Current Club: Real Madrid
Position: Attacking midfieldeWinger
Connection: Dutch mother
Dutch National Team: No caps
Easily the biggest name on this list, Asensio’s Dutch heritage becomes clear when you read his full Spanish name as Marco Asensio Willemsen, with the latter name coming from his late mother. He still visits family in the Netherlands, as shown on his Instagram. That said, he was born and raised in Spain, so him going for anything else always seemed unlikely. That didn’t stop then manager Danny Blind, fresh from the Ziyech debacle (more on that later) from giving him a call along with using Ruud van Nistelrooy as a charm offensive. Needless to say, that didn’t work, but I’d like to imagine a universe where it did. Look forward to going through the same thing with Xavi Simons in a couple years.
MBARK BOUSSOUFA
Current Club: Al Jazira
Position: Attacking Midfielder, Left Winger
Connection: Born in Amsterdam
Dutch national team: No caps
Part of the same Ajax player generation as Wesley Sneijder and Nigel de Jong, Boussoufa was considered a huge talent of the Ajax youth academy, but decided to join the youth academy of Chelsea. This was before the Abramovich era though, and when that all happened and the club was attracting star after star, he realized a breakthrough was looking unlikely. He moved to Belgium, becoming a key player for Gent Anderlecht before moving to Russia. Despite being Amsterdam born and raised, he’s never played in the Dutch league, which led to him being mostly out of sight for the KNVB, and he chose to play for Morocco in 2006, despite van Basten’s supposed interest in him (though getting van Basten's interest wasn’t particuarely hard, considering the players that got called up in that era). He’s been a staple ever since, and will be vice-captain of the team.
TYRONNE EBUEHI
Current Club: ADO Den Haag . Moving to Benfica
Position: Right-back
Connection: Born in Haarlem to Dutch mother
Dutch national team: No caps
Here’s something different. Born to a Nigerian father and Dutch mother, Ebuehi didn’t really have an international career for the Super Eagles in mind, initially declining when manager Gernot Rohr called him to see if he was interested. He admitted to VI that he hadn’t been to Nigeria in close to a decade, and felt it’d be weird to represent a country he barely knew. But Rohr persisted, and eventually he accepted the invite. He’s been a part of the squad since, and has since moved from midtable ADO Den Haag to Portugese giants Benfica on a free transfer. Not bad for a player who still played amateur football in 2013.
REZA GHOOCHANNEJHAD
Current Club: SC Heerenveen
Position: Striker
Connection: Raised in the Netherlands since the age of four.
Dutch national team: 9 combined caps from the U-16–U-19
Born in Iran, but emigrating to Holland when he was 4, Ghoochannejhad played in both the Cambuur and Heerenveen youth academy. A talented striker, he played some youth caps up until the u-19, but he had issues breaking through before going back to Cambuur in the Dutch 2nd division, where he scored one of the fastest goals in Dutch football history. However, it was his time at Sint-Truiden in Belgium, where Iran manager Carlos Quieroz took notice and called him up in 2012. He’s been a part of the squad ever since, scoring Iran’s only goal in the previous World Cup appearance in Brazil. With Azmoun doing incredibly well for Iran, its gonna be interesting to see how much game time Reza will get, but he's an valued player all the same.
AARON MOOY
Current club: Huddersfield
Position: Midfielder
Connection: Dutch mother
Dutch national team: No caps
This is one of those “wait, really?” pieces of trivia, but yes, Aaron Mooy is Dutch, or rather he has a Dutch passport thanks to his mom. After his German-born father and mom divorced and didn’t really take a part in his life, he took his mother’s name, which is probably and Anglicized version of Mooij or Mooi, which means “beautiful” or “pretty” in Dutch. He was eligible for a Dutch passport through her, which he took so he could go to Bolton Wanderers without the need of a work permit. Besides that, the Dutch national team probably never was a serious option for Mooy, but he carries the nationality all the same.
WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG
Current club: Bursaspor
Position: Defender
Connection: Born in Haarlem to Dutch mother
Dutch national team: 3 combined caps for U-19 and U-20
Another Haarlem born defender with a Dutch mother, but that’s where the similarities between Ebuehi and Troost Ekong end. The defender chose early on to go to England for his youth development, joining the youth teams of Fulham and later Tottenham Hotspur, where he played and became friends wirh Harry Kane. With a breakthrough unlikely, he moved back home and joined FC Groningen, who loaned him out to recently promoted FC Dordrecht to gain experience. There, he was approached by Gernot Rohr to play for Nigeria, which he accepted. Since then, his stature has only grown in the national team, with him captaining the squad in their most recent friendly against Poland.
HAKIM ZIYECH
Current club: Ajax
Position: Attacking midfielder
Connection: Born in Dronten
Dutch national team: Combined 8 caps for u-19 – u-21. Called up, but backed out due to injury
Hoo boy, this one stings. Ziyech is the exact type of player the Netherlands needs right now. One that’s able to bring creativity and pace to a team that sorely needs a Sneijder replacement. Ziyech’s talent was obvious in his Heerenveen days, and has only grown in stature at FC Twente, where he basically carried the whole team in time of crisis, and Ajax. Guus Hiddink called him up for a friendly against the US and EURO qualifying games against Latvia, which Ziyech happily accepted. Unfortunately, he had to back out because of an injury. Not long after, Hiddink was sacked after winning only 4 in 10 games, and was replaced with Danny Blind, who in his first matches didn’t call Ziyech up because he felt Ziyech played more like a second striker instead of a midfielder at Twente, and the system was still very, very important. Afterwards, Ziyech accepted a Morocco call-up for 2 friendlies, but since he’d play an official match for U-21, if he switched again, it would be permanent. After plenty of drama, Ziyech decided to officially switch his allegiance for Morocco. Since then, despite butting heads with Hevre Renard, which meant he didn’t go to AFCON 2017, he’s one of the undisputed stars of the Moroccan team, and one I’d have really wanted to see in the orange shirt. Siiiiiiiiigh. So yeah, we might not bet here officially, but there’s at least a little part of us representing different nations, all for various different reasons. There might not be enough for a full XI, and even if we did, its very midfield heavy, but when you’re a country that hasn’t qualified despite a rich football history, you take what you get, so good luck to all these players.

We are more important than any player they have got. We'll play against whoever they put on the pitch. I would expect they would relish the battle against him [Torres] but they have competed brilliantly against everyone since I have come in
HALF TIME - Awesome Game. Torres had one chance, runs onto a ball from Drogba that was cut across goal. Brilliant last second block from Carragher. And then there was Maxi. Maxi, maxi maxi. No doubt that video will be all over reddit within an hour.
