[Discussion] 25 great albums you might have missed from 2019. Spotify playlist included.
Spotify playlist is here Google Play playlist courtesy of u/TimeFourChanges is here Apple Music playlist courtesy of u/LegoWaffles is here Last year I listened to over 800 albums and posted a few of my favorites. This year I did the same thing, and I’ve had some people asking me to post again, so here goes. These are not my top 25 albums. These are just 25 albums that I felt were sorely overlooked. Last year some people rightly complained that I included artists which broke the sub’s popularity rules. I’ve done my best to ensure that none of these artists have more than three songs with 500,000+ plays on Spotify, nor 250,000+ listeners on Last.FM. I apologize in advance if something was overlooked. Hopefully we can help get these artists and albums some of the credit they truly deserve! Without further ado, here are 25 great albums you might have missed in 2019: 1. Peter Cat Recording Co. - Bismillah (Released 6/7/19, India) I’ll admit right off the bat that I’m a huge Tool fan, so my choice for best album of the year is definitely biased. But Bismillah by Peter Cat Recording Co., my second favorite album of the year, sounds nothing like Tool. In fact, it’s pretty much as far as you can get from extended prog metal jams. The music defies classification, drawing from a breadth of influences including rock, folk, jazz, and electronica. The vocals are rich and smooth, reminiscent of classic pop stars like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. So far, no one I’ve introduced to this album has disliked it. At this point, I’d go so far as to say it will likely appeal to anyone who just plain loves music. Please do yourself a favor and listen to this incredible album! Standout Tracks: Where the Money Flows, Memory Box, Freezing, Heera 2. Mdou Moctar - Ilana, the Creator (Released 3/29/19, Niger) There’s a lot of incredible music coming out of African countries that goes virtually unnoticed in the west. Mdou Moctar is one of those artists, a king of desert rock guitar whose psychedelic jams draw heavily on Tuareg folk music. There is an infectious energy to this album that doesn’t let up from beginning to end, and every time I listen, I find myself wishing it were a few songs longer. Despite the fact that I can’t understand a word of the lyrics, it’s one of those albums that makes me feel like I can hear colors and taste sounds. The next time I get my hands on some LSD, this will be my go-to record. Standout Tracks: Kamane Tarhanin, Tarhatazed, Tumastin 3. Flamingods - Levitation (Released 5/3/19, Bahrain) In a year with new albums from Pond and the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, not to mention two new albums from King Gizzard, I never expected this album from a little-known Bahraini group to blow the Australian psychedelic scene out of the water. It’s unpretentious and unassuming, playing it safe rather than pushing the limits of studio experimentation, but Levitation needs no gimmicks. The melodies are catchy and memorable, backed by tight instrumentation with lots of guitar noodling. The influence of traditional Middle Eastern music is audible, but usually subtle. Though there is still room for the band to grow in its sound, this album is nearly perfect as it is. Standout Tracks: Astral Plane, Peaches, Mantra 4. Bruno Bavota - RE_CORDIS (Released 1/18/19, Italy) Winter is usually the slow season for new album releases, but the mood of the season perfectly matches the mood of RE_CORDIS. It’s a fairly straightforward album of instrumental compositions enhanced by the lightest accents and effects that demonstrate the delicacy with which Bruno Bavota hones his work. The instrumentation varies from song to song just enough to stay engaging, and while it does encourage wandering thoughts, there are many subtleties to actively listen for. It’s one of those albums that sounds best as you’re just drifting off to sleep, when the silence and darkness of the room allows each note to stand out. Standout Tracks: Passengers, La luce nel cuore, The Man Who Chased the Sea 5. Cykada - Cykada (Released 3/29/19, England, UK) For a debut album, Cykada is pretty impressive, and that’s because the musicians behind it are already well established in the London jazz scene. Which of course means jack shit in the world of pop music, so I hope you’ll forgive me stretching the rules of the sub just a little to show off this “supergroup” ensemble. There are only five songs on Cykada, but with the shortest clocking in at just under six minutes, each one feels like a journey in and of itself. If the opening of the first track doesn’t immediately hook you, then perhaps this isn’t the group for you. But if it does, I think you’ll find yourself hanging onto every note until the end of the nearly 12-minute jam that closes out the album. Standout Tracks: Creation, Ophelia’s Message, Third Eye Thunder 6. Claude Fontaine - Claude Fontaine (Released 4/26/19, California, US) There’s a tropical undercurrent to the songs on Claude Fontaine, which shamelessly dips into Carribean and Latin American influences, but the tone of the album more somber than sunny. The vocals come across as wistful, at times loney, and the lo-fi production adds a degree of separation that feels like listening to a memory of a bygone summer. There’s nothing technically impressive about this album, and in fact the opposite is often true, but something about the raw introspection coupled with atypical Latin grooves feels like slipping into a dream. Standout Tracks: Hot Tears, Love Street, Pretending He Was You 7. Iguana Death Cult - Nude Casino (Released 10/25/19, Netherlands) By the time Iguana Death Cult released their album Nude Casino just before Halloween, I was expecting the year to more or less be over, musically speaking. Then I found myself playing this album on repeat at work, and it quickly shot up into my top 20 on the strength of every song being an absolute jam. The band is so clearly having fun that it’s all but impossible not to join in. The bouncy, dance-like energy reminds me a bit of early Arctic Monkeys. As an added credit, I’d say they’re a strong contender for the best band name/album name combo of the year. Standout Tracks: Nude Casino, Liquify, Nature Calls 8. Saor - Forgotten Paths (Released 2/15/19, Scotland, UK) This album feels cinematic, on the scale of Lord of the Rings or The Avengers. It’s an overwhelming experience, like watching thunderheads roll in over the plains, except instead of thunder and lightning it’s blast beats and metal screams. There are moments of symphonic grandeur, but also passages of graceful simplicity that draw inspiration from folk and chamber music. Even if you aren’t generally a fan of distorted vocals, it’s worth a listen for the instrumentals alone. Standout Tracks: Forgotten Paths, Monadh, Bròn 9. Sandro Perri - Soft Landing (Released9/6/19, Canada) I’m not really sure how to describe or categorize Sandro Perri’s music. Google suggests he’s been classified as “post rock”, “ambient”, and “folk”, but none of those terms really see to fit. His music is experimental if nothing else, exploring the simplest ideas to the fullest extent and crafting entire songs around short musical phrases. Despite the peaceful vibe, Soft Landing isn’t really background music. The pieces of the puzzle all sound familiar on their own, but Sandro Perri assembles them in a way that sounds strange and unique, and might cause you to involuntarily cock your head to the side as you listen. Standout Tracks: Time (You Got Me), Wrong About the Rain, Soft Landing 10. Uluru - Acrophilia (Released 2/8/19, Turkey) One thing that I love about the explosion of psychedelic rock over the past decade is that it’s largely transcended geography. Uluru is another example of the intersection between Middle Eastern and psychedelic music, but unlike Flamingods, Uluru tends more towards the crunchy stoner rock end of the spectrum. This album is also different in that it’s entirely instrumental, but that doesn’t make it feel incomplete. At just seven songs, each between 3-8 minutes, Acrophilia is just the right size to leave an impression without wearing on into endless jam sessions. Standout Tracks: Şark, Constantine, Aeternum 11. Jimmy “Duck” Holmes - Cypress Grove (Released 10/18/19, Mississippi, US) Some music ages like fine wine, but the blues ages like whiskey. Like many underappreciated blues pioneers, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes didn’t start recording studio albums until fairly late in his life. Despite going unnoticed by the music industry, Holmes is a fixture of Mississippi blues history, and deserves every bit as much acclamation as his contemporaries. Cypress Grove doesn’t features surprising new compositions. It’s the work of a true artist interpreting old standards, and though it sticks keenly to tradition, there’s nothing quite as genuine as an old blues master pouring a lifetime of experience into an acoustic guitar. Standout Tracks: Catfish Blues, Goin’ Away Baby, Little Red Rooster 12. Julian Taylor Band - Avalanche (Released 3/29/19, Canada) This album exemplifies the meaning of “groove”. Lyrically it doesn’t offer any hot takes or great philosophical depth, but it will make your foot tap and your head nod whether you like it or not. It’s music for late summer evenings, for grilling out and driving to the beach. But if you like magic mushrooms and hackysack, this album might touch you on a deep emotional level. Standout Tracks: Time, Back Again, Never Let the Lights Go Dim 13. Modern Nature - How to Live (Released 8/23/19, England, UK) How to Live didn’t leave much of an impression when I first heard it back in September, but as I was going back over my top albums at the end of the year, it suddenly connected with me. Maybe it was the funky beats, or the flawless blend of electric and acoustic instruments. Maybe it was just the large quantity of marijuana edibles I’d ingested. But there’s something fascinating and engaging about the delivery of these songs. It’s not just the vocals, which are hardly above a whisper. Even the instrumentals sound stealthy, as if the band recorded at night and didn’t want to wake the neighbors. The songs also stick with you, but not in the sense of a Top 40 earworm. More like a ghost haunting from just over your shoulder. Each time I listen to this album I find something new to like about it. Standout Tracks: Footsteps, Peradam, Nature 14. Fvneral Fvkk - Carnal Confessions (Released 9/27/19, Germany) Everything about this band seems intentionally offensive, from their conjunction of religion and sexuality to their egregious misspelling of the word “fuck”. But when you’re through clutching your pearls, check out the rich vocals and heavy riffs that make this metal band’s debut album stand out. If you’re into heavy rock but don’t care for unclean vocals, this should make you a happy camper. Unless you’re a member of the clergy, then perhaps give this album a pass. Standout Tracks: Chapel of Abuse, A Shadow in the Dormitory, The Hallowed Leech 15. Dommengang - No Keys (Released 5/17/19, California, US) Dommengang aren’t breaking down musical barriers, but I can’t find a single song on this album that I dislike. In the era of music streaming, there’s something to be said for a collection of solid singles that can each stand on their own. But No Keys is more than just a collection of singles. The sum of its parts is a cohesive album that touches on blues rock, psychedelic, and metal without committing to any one style, all following a current of driving rock guitar riffs with plenty of flourishes. Standout Tracks: Wild Wash, Kudzu, Jerusalem Cricket 16. Magic Circle - Departed Souls (Released 3/29/19, Massachusetts, US) Magic Circle is a bit like the Greta Van Fleet of Black Sabbath wannabes. Unlike Greta Van Fleet, however, these guys have serious musical talent and songwriting ability that make Departed Souls more of a respectful tribute than a piss on the legacy of 70s hard rock. There is also a good bit of originality to this album, and while it’s obvious that vocalist could pull off a flawless Ozzy impression if he tried, there’s a modicum of restraint that suggests the incorporation of broader influences. In fact, some of the albums best moments are when the band isn’t directly emulating the classics. Standout Tracks: Departed Souls, Valley of the Lepers, Nightland 17. Obsequiae - The Palms of Sorrowed Kings (Released 11/22/19, Minnesota, US) The Palms of Sorrowed Kings is an album of stark contrasts, catapulting back and forth between brutal, howling metal and languid, acoustic folk. The end result is an emotional journey with moments of triumph, rage, introspection, heartbreak, and tranquility. While the vocals accentuate some of the album’s more powerful moments, they aren’t highlighted above any of the other instruments, instead blending into the cacophony like the voice of a commander shouting orders across a field of battle. Fans of tabletop RPGs might want this album playing in the background of an adventuring session. Standout Tracks: Palästinalied, Morrígan, Lone Isle 18. Black Peaches - Fire in the Hole (Released 5/17/19, England, UK) Black Peaches have a sort of jam band aesthetic, drawing on the musical influences of the southern US to flavor their brand of psychedelic indie rock. Despite the frontman’s tangential involvement with Hot Chip, the band is firmly rooted in drums and guitars, with a sound more comparable to Phish or Widespread Panic than any synthpop outfit. Whether cranking along to frantic percussion or grooving smoothly over funk textures, the songs on Fire in the Hole are wild and dynamic from beginning to end. Standout Tracks: Fire in the Hole, Black Peach Boogie, Pillars of Hercules 19. YĪN YĪN - The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers (Released 10/18/19, Netherlands) As much as I try to be objective when approaching new music, I can’t help but love what I love. The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers checks a lot of boxes for me: psychedelic atmosphere, unique instrumentation, lengthy jams, danceable rhythms, incorporation of world music styles - even the artwork instantly attracted me to this album. While perhaps it’s not a perfect record, it has a lot of relistenability, and no other album released in 2019 sounds quite like it. Standout Tracks: One Inch Punch, The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers, Dis̄ kô Dis̄ kô 20. Red Rum Club - Matador (Released 1/11/19, England, UK) What’s the easiest way to make your generic indie band stand out? Add a trumpet! Seriously, that’s pretty much what makes the album work. Fans of alt pop bands like Neon Trees, Catfish and the Bottlemen, or Young the Giant will recognize the rather formulaic approach to songwriting - powerful vocals, straightforward lyrics, and hopelessly catchy hooks. But regardless of how many sound-alikes you’ve heard, the soaring brassy tones on Matador imbue the songs with an irresistible dancefloor spirit. Standout Tracks: Hung Up, Honey, Calexico 21. Ouzo Bazooka - Transporter (Released 1/11/19, Israel) Ouzo Bazooka isn’t the first group to combine the raw energy of garage rock with the experimental songwriting of psychedelia, but they play it with such skill that any lack of originality should be forgiven. Like many contemporary bands inspired by the music of the 60s and 70s, Ouzo Bazooka isn’t picky about the sources from which they draw influence, and their music benefits from that open-mindedness. At times they appear to be firmly planted in unassuming rock n roll, only to blast off to the cosmos at a moment’s notice, taking you along for the ride. Standout Tracks: Latest News, Space Camel, Killing Me 22. Konradsen - Saints and Sebastian Stories (Released 10/25/19, Norway) Konradsen makes a lot of interesting musical decisions in the songwriting on Saints and Sebastian Stories. These songs aren’t likely to hook you on your first listen, and might even seem off-putting as they meander slowly over layers of studio effects. The album follows the precedent set by experimental indie artists like Bon Iver, combining disparate elements from jazz percussion lingering piano chords to shy-sounding horns. It’s the type of album that takes a couple songs to warm up, but then continues escalating and improving as it unfolds. Standout Tracks: Dice, Baby Hallelujah, Red to Rhyme 23. Black String - Karma (Released 9/27/19, South Korea) Generally speaking, jazz isn’t my favorite genre. That said, Karma doesn’t sound like what most people first think of when they hear the word “jazz”. The improvisational aspect is there, but the songs are structured around traditional Korean music in a way that subverts western expectations. Fortunately for us westerners, the group has provided a sort of jumping off point in their brilliant cover of Radiohead’s Exit Music (For a Film), reworked until only the bare bones are recognisable. Standout Tracks: Sureña, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Exit Music - For a Film 24. the one and only PPL MVR - THE CHOSEN (Released 6/4/19, California, US) There’s this crazy theory going around that the one and only PPL MVR is actually just the members of Brand New dressed in yeti suits. I’m operating under the assumption that the theory is bunk, and that this gimmicky band is just an underappreciated power trio with a flair for the dramatic. While the band’s prevailing sound can best be described as heavy rock music, they certainly don’t feel the need to pigeonhole themselves. From power chords to autotune, nothing is off the table. Standout Tracks: NML, MOVE, THE SHOW THAT NEVER ENDS 25. The Garifuna Collective - Aban (Released 9/15/19, Belize) The Garifuna Collective is ever so slightly outside the normal popularity parameters for listentothis (their third most popular song has 524,000 plays on Spotify), so I beg your leniency for this incredible group of musicians who are widely unknown outside Central America. It’s so outside the spectrum of my normal listening habits that I don’t really know how to classify this kind of music. All I do know is that the rhythms are infectious and the melodies compelling. I’m always somewhat surprised when a group of musicians who speak a different language and live in a place I’ve never visited can reach me through music in a way that transcends culture. The combination of predictable patterns and unfamiliar elements is precisely why I pause to listen. Standout Tracks: Wiya Waist, Ideruni (Help), Magidu (The Market) As in 2018, I’ve also been keeping a spreadsheet to track my top 500 favorite albums throughout the year. If anyone’s interested, you can view it here, as well as a 500 song playlist including one song from each album (link is at the top of the spreadsheet). Keep in mind that most of my top 500 albums don’t meet the popularity rules of this sub, nor is it the focus of this post. Since people asked for it last year, I just figured I’d share it again.

Bret Hart officially announced his retirement this week due to concussions he suffered starting back at Starrcade from a Goldberg kick. Doctors actually speculated that Hart may have had a concussion going into the match, but the kick magnified the damage. Following the Goldberg match, Hart continued to wrestle for a couple of weeks and got rocked again several times, particularly in a hardcore match with Terry Funk. Doctors said he's suffered about 10% brain damage, some of which may be permanent. Despite the injury, there was always the possibility that he could have remained an on-screen character in some role. But Hart was fired by WCW last week, which basically left him with no real options, since he has no intention of ever working for WWF again and said he doesn't want to end his career by working his way down the minor league food chain like so many other wrestlers do. Dave says Hart will be remembered for many things, and while his career had no shortage of memorable moments, the name Bret Hart will always be mostly associated with what happened in Montreal 3 years ago and with the death of his brother Owen. The first was the most historically influential match in modern times and Owen's death was the biggest mainstream news story in wrestling history. The last 3 years of Bret's life have been hell, from a disappointing WCW run, injuries, and the utter destruction of the Hart family in the wake of Owen's death. Dave thinks it's sad because if this was Japan or Mexico, the wrestling culture there is different. If a star on the level of Bret Hart retired there, they would have elaborate retirement ceremonies and make a huge deal of it. But here in America, he was double-crossed out of the WWF to avoid giving him a fond farewell, and then he was unceremoniously fired from WCW rather than having a chance to officially retire in the ring or give a speech for his fans. Then again, with the state of WCW, nobody would have believed a Bret Hart retirement speech anyway, since everyone would just suspect an angle. But it sucks that he's having to hang up the boots while unemployed and with no outlet to be given the send-off he deserves.
Dave recaps Bret's career, starting as a teenager in the Amarillo territory with Dory Funk, his time in Japan, and then starting in Stampede and working his way up the ladder there (he started as an opening match jobber). Forming the Hart Foundation with Neidhart, their years together in WWF, his singles run, becoming IC and WWF champion when business was down and Vince needed someone who wasn't exploding with steroids to be the face of the company. As WWF champion, business was weak in the U.S. but Hart was a huge draw when WWF toured internationally (which they did a lot more back then because U.S. business was so bad). And then of course, Shawn Michaels, the Screwjob, and off to WCW where he was the hottest star in the business upon arrival. But from there, he was the victim of injuries and horrible booking and Hart in WCW never clicked. Dave goes on and on about the countless times WCW dropped the ball with how they booked Bret. Anyway, Hart has ruled out ever wrestling again, for fear of more brain damage and not wanting to live the rest of his life as a drooling vegetable. He also shot down the idea of ever being a manager because he's unhappy with the direction of the business and says he's leaving the industry entirely, not just the in-ring part. He plans to spend the next year working on a book about his life and doing some acting. Luckily, he should be well off financially. He earned north of 7 figures during his last four years in the business and has a Lloyds of London disability policy that will pay him the equivalent of 6 months salary, which will be another million or so.
Bret Hart announced his retirement in his Calgary Sun column and since you can't just easily find this online anymore, here's what Bret wrote:
There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That'll be the beginning." -- Louis La'Amour. I'm really sorry to have to say that my professional wrestling career is over--forever. Although I've expected it to end for some time now, I could in no way ever prepare for it. I suppose it doesn't do much good to speak negatively about how this or that has gone for me. I feel it is more fitting right now to remember the more positive aspects of my long and great career. I have not one regret. I'm proud of all my achievements, especially my seven World Heavyweight Championships. I will miss the cities, the countries, especially the people--all colours, all religions, all ages, all languages. I've always tried my absolute best in every match, in every city, big or small, in countries all around the world. I cannot begin to explain how proud I am to have touched so many people with the ability to wrestle. My heart is filled with memories. Like when I was mobbed at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem by Palestinian children, tears in their eyes, kissing my hands. In Belfast, Ireland, being cheered on by both Catholic and Protestant fans, the emotions that poured out as I walked around the ring high-fiving our victory together. The time I was in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, where they waved Canadian flags and chanted O Canada! I could go on endlessly, but maybe it's easier to say I was privileged to be the only world champion who really travelled the world. I hope that my fans who have kept the faith, believing in me, may in some small way take some lesson from me that will help them in their lifetime. I will never forget how touched I was in Rochester, N.Y. in one of my last matches, when a bunch of die-hard fans held up a sign that read: Parking $10, Program $5, Ticket $35, watching Bret Hitman Hart wrestle--priceless." I'm forever grateful for the doors that opened bringing me to America. Thank you for having me, for giving me so much. I thank all my fans everywhere. I owe you all for everything I am. As for the wrestlers, it would mean a lot to me to always be remembered as "one of the boys." I've made great friendships that will last my lifetime and look forward to an easier life filled with reminiscing. To all of you who worked with me, carried me, and trusted me, those who allowed my success to continue while theirs did not, all from a deep sense of tradition and honour. I tried to always work hard to be champion in your eyes first. My greatest accomplishment is knowing that I never seriously harmed one wrestler. It may not seem important, but I want it remembered that in all the years I never, ever refused to lose to another wrestler--except once--and that was that fateful day in Montreal, where it's clear that I stood up for "the boys." I could begin to list all the great wrestlers I either watched or worked with, but it would take forever. I will simply say that I'd give anything to climb into the ring with so many of you just one more time. To most people, wrestling is stupid, it's fake, it doesn't mean anything. When I think about it, I'm reminded of a quote by George Braque: "Art is a sound turned to light." I drift back to a time when I was 23 years old, wrestling for my father, in Regina, making $150 a night. It looked like it was going to be a near full crowd on hand to see me take on my arch rival, The Dynamite Kid, in a ladder match. The title and a bag supposedly containing $5,000 dangled from a string above the ring. Whoever could climb the ladder and grab it first would be the winner. We were both so young when I look back on it now, so intense, when the bell rang, we tore into each other, ferociously, eventually spilling out onto the floor. I went to slam Dynamite's head into a steel chair. He, of course, had his hands up for protection, but I had no idea he would hit it so hard. His head bounced back, I tried to turn, but our heads smashed. I split the back of his head open and shattered my face, one of those rare accidents. I could tell it was bad. I could poke my finger through a gaping hole in the middle of my nose. The blood poured. We fought on. I remember Dynamite jumping up high, gripping that heavy steel ladder coming down straight down on my head. I didn't move. The crowd gasped. I dreamed a smile--because he never even touched me. He really was the best. Finally, I had him right where I wanted him, but the referee was down. That's when J.R. Foley crept up on the apron and whacked me across the back with his heavy walking stick. Down I went. The crowd was furious--so unfair. Dynamite began to climb to the top, his fingers reaching. Suddenly, I jumped up, throwing a perfect desperation drop kick, just like he asked me. "...just barely touch the ladder with your toes. I'll control how I go over." Sure enough, the ladder wobbled and tipped, he grimaced, over they both went, with amazing timing. Dynamite leapt off, straddling the top rope, bouncing up and out right on top of J.R. Foley. But the ladder hit the top rope with such force, bouncing all the way back, heading right toward me. I was lucky I saw it. I rolled and rolled as fast as I could. It crashed with a thud, missing my head by only inches. I sat up, checking to see if Dynamite was hurt. He appeared to be all right, but still both of us knew we'd be going for some stitches. He was riding with me, so he had to duck down when we drove past the fans on the way to the Pasqua Hospital. From there, we drove back home, all night, so that we could wrestle the following night, too tired to say a word to each other. But if I can stop right there...to somehow try and explain just what it is that I will miss the most about wrestling, I loved it all so much. I stood that big steel ladder up, one step up, climbing higher and higher, the crowd soaring with me, louder and louder, the blood dripping off my nose...reaching...I pulled that belt down and there it was--it happened. The crowd exploded. We blew the roof off...so loud I could not hear a single sound except the beating of my own heart. If you're lucky enough to find a way of life you live, you also have to find the courage to finally say goodbye. I'll put my guns in the ground. I can't shoot them any more.
The WWF/Owen Hart lawsuit was verbally settled out of court, pending a court approval scheduled later this week. Various sources have pegged the settlement at $18 million. It's believed Stu and Helen Hart will receive somewhere between $2-3 million, with the rest going to Martha Hart and her two young children. Martha told the Calgary Sun that the whole ordeal has been a nightmare and she can't say much more for legal reasons but that she's satisfied with the settlement. It's believed that WWF may file suit against the company that manufactured the rigging equipment, but Vince McMahon would only say that they are exploring their options on that. Martha Hart had previously vowed she would never settle before the case went to court, but those close to her say she was tired of the stress and was particularly upset that the case had torn the Hart family apart. Stu and Helen in particular were eager to settle and get it over with. The first round of settlement talks went poorly, with McMahon reportedly offering $17 million and refusing to budge, while Martha's initial asking price was said to be $32 million. It ended with Martha "cutting a promo" on Vince (oh Dave...) and talks broke off. The case was made more complicated by different Hart members' inability to stop talking to the media against lawyers' advice. At one point, Ellie Neidhart (Nattie's mom), who has sided against her parents and with WWF in the case, took a document from Stu Hart regarding all of the Hart children getting money out of the case and passed it on to WWF's lawyers, which engulfed the Hart lawyers in a storm of controversy and nearly blew up their whole case. The original Feb. 2001 court date was postponed indefinitely following that and with no new court date in sight so it was likely to continue dragging on for months and maybe even years. So ultimately, Martha decided to settle (yeah I think to this day, Martha blames Ellie for almost destroying the case and that's why she was forced to settle). As of press time, Bret Hart hasn't yet commented on the settlement, but he knew it was coming. He was on the Observer Live online show the day before it was finalized and said he understood Martha's position and would support whatever decision she made.
The downward spiral of Davey Boy Smith hit a new low this week when he was arrested on 2 separate occasions for allegedly threatening the life of his estranged wife, Diana Hart-Smith. Dave talks about Smith's worsening drug problems in recent years along with all his health issues in between and how he's been in and out of the hospital constantly in the last two years. He also had a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago, multiple rehab stints, etc. Anyway, Smith was arrested on Oct. 25th and again on Oct. 26th. The first time, it was on 2 counts of threatening to kill his wife and her sister Ellie (again...Nattie's mom). After being released the next day, he allegedly threatened his wife again and was arrested again. She thought he was still in custody and went back to the house and was surprised to find him there and that led to the second arrest. Police have been to their house several times in the last few months for domestic disputes. There was also an incident a while back with Smith getting into a fight with Diana's new boyfriend, a Stampede wrestler who wrestles under the name Dick Butkus Jr. during which 85-year-old Stu Hart had to get involved and help break it up. Anyway, Smith spent this past weekend behind bars in Calgary, spending his time signing autographs for other inmates, but was released on the 30th on bail. But he faces 5 charges related to all his threats. Part of the conditions for his release were paying a $10,000 fine and he's not allowed to have any contact with Diana, Ellie, Bruce Hart, or Diana's new boyfriend. (Dave later mentions that Davey Boy is shacking up with Bruce's estranged wife Andrea now. Man, this fuckin' family, I tell ya...) He's also not allowed to drink or take any non-prescribed drugs and is ordered to stay away from where his wife is staying, along with staying away from Bruce Hart's home and Stu Hart's home. He was also ordered to enter rehab, even though he denied in court that he still has a drug problem.
Davey Boy is still under WWF contract, though he hasn't wrestled a match in months. But the WWF has suspended him pending the company's own investigation of the charges. In the past, he blamed his drug issues and back problems from taking a bump on Ultimate Warrior's trap door in the ring when he was in WCW. Dave recaps the series of events that led to him getting rehired by WWF and talks about how they hired Jim Neidhart back as well and it was no secret that Smith, Diana, and Neidhart's wife Ellie were all planning to testify against the family in the Owen Hart case if it had gone to trial. So it wasn't exactly a coincidence that both Smith and Neidhart got jobs that neither of them really had any business getting (Neidhart was hired as a trainer, which everyone knew he wasn't qualified for and Smith was brought back as a wrestler despite a crippling back injury and more crippling drug problem). Neidhart was quietly released a few weeks ago and with the Owen Hart lawsuit finally settled, it probably doesn't look good for Smith (indeed, he never stepped foot in the WWF again).
WCW Halloween Havoc is in the books and was possibly the worst wrestling PPV of the year. At this point, you'd think everyone in WCW would be putting their best foot forward to impress potential buyers, especially if that buyer ends up being the WWF and Vince becomes their new boss. But it was almost all bad matches and abysmal booking. The only bright side is that it was in Vegas and a lot of the tickets were sold to casinos for giveaways, so the show ended up being one of the biggest live gates WCW has had in awhile, even if the crowd wasn't exactly all wrestling fans. Russo is now out of the picture (claiming post-concussion syndrome and stress), but the show was booked by guys like Ed Ferrara and Bill Banks, who are basically mini-Russos and are just keeping his chair warm. So it wasn't quite the same scattershot chaos as most Russo-booked shows, but it still had the same lack of understanding about what makes a good wrestling show that Russo has perfected. Everyone involved (Ferrara, Banks, Terry Taylor, Johnny Ace, etc.) were told to continue Russo's stories rather than changing direction so everything mostly stayed the same.
Other notes from Halloween Havoc: the opening tag title three-way match was the best and really only good match on the show., due to Mysterio, Kidman, and Alex Wright's performances. In typical WCW fashion, they had a top notch snafu showing Palumbo and Stasiak in their street clothes backstage, just seconds after being in their gear and doing a run-in on the previous match. So they put up a thing on the screen that said "taped earlier in the day" to cover for it, but then during the segment, Palumbo and Stasiak were talking about what they just did in the ring minutes earlier. David Flair looked totally lost in his first blood match with Bagwell and even though he's been a midcard star in WCW for over a year now, Dave says if he went to OVW, he'd still be the worst guy on the roster. David Flair is just not ready for the big leagues and it shows. Negative star. Mike Sanders vs. The Cat in a kickboxing match was a total clusterfuck that Cat apparently refused to do the job for since it's "his" gimmick match, so he lost by count-out instead, even though the time limit for the last round had already expired and it was just a mess. Negative half star. Mike Awesome vs. Vampiro is negative 2.5 stars. That's three matches in a row in the negatives, with 2 DUD rankings book-ending them. Dave expected Awesome/Vampiro to actually be good but it had more blown spots than any match he's seen on PPV in years. They were apparently supposed to do a table spot to end the match but they couldn't find any tables under the ring and the match fell apart and Vampiro ended up taking a top rope powerbomb that gave him a concussion and shook him up badly (didn't stop WCW from having him take another powerbomb at the Thunder taping the next day, even though he told them beforehand about the concussion, but we'll get there). And babyface world champion Booker T was booed by a good chunk of the crowd during his match with Scott Steiner.
The latest PRIDE event in Japan drew a sellout crowd mostly due to so many pro wrestlers being involved. It also saw Naoya Ogawa defeat Masaaki Satake in a match most people believed was worked. Ogawa is Antonio Inoki's protege and he's keeping Ogawa protected. Dave says it definitely helps Ogawa keep his name and star power in a highly publicized match, but it doesn't say a lot for PRIDE's credibility. There's also suspicion that Nobuhiko Takada's fight against Igor Vovchanchyn was somewhat worked. Takada lost, but Igor is one of the top ranked heavyweights in the world and Takada went nearly 2 full rounds with him. Most people suspect the finish wasn't worked, but that Igor was told to take it easy on him because Takada is still a big draw and they wanted him to look strong in defeat against a guy he had no chance with. There were several other wrestlers on the card as well. Inoki came out at intermission and announced he was putting together his own show at the Osaka Dome for New Year's Eve (this ends up being the Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye show, which also sees Inoki come out of retirement for his final "match" ever. More on all this in a bit).
Genichiro Tenryu, at age 51, defeated Toshiaki Kawada to win the tournament and be crowned AJPW's newest Triple Crown champion, filling the vacancy left over after previous champion Kobashi left for NOAH. This complicates the AJPW/NJPW angle. There's 2 Tokyo Dome shows coming up in January. The first is NJPW's Jan. 4th show and there's another one near the end of the month that's an AJPW show, but will have some NJPW involvement. But Motoko Baba wants to protect the champion because she's hoping AJPW will still survive after the NJPW angle is over. In the past, companies like UWFI and WAR were desperate to survive and started working with NJPW, only to be devoured by NJPW's booking and left to die after the angle ran its course. Mrs. Baba is hoping to avoid the same fate, so she's not going to let Tenryu work a NJPW show and lose (remember, at the last show, NJPW's champion Kensuke Sasaki lost to Kawada and they won't let that happen 2 times in a row). Now that he's not the champion, it frees Kawada up to have a rematch with Sasaki, where he will presumably return the favor and do the job, but it won't be to unify the titles anymore.
Let's look at some various poll results. Every issue has results for the polls they run online every day or so. Usually I skip over these because they're boring but they're kinda interesting this week. "How should WCW handle the situation with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall" got 55% of voters saying Nash should be suspended for going off script on live TV. As for the future of ECW, 30% of voters think it won't last much longer, while most everyone else thinks it will struggle but continue to survive. Whoops. And finally, Bret Hart's greatest match was 35% for the match with Owen at WM10 and 33% for the match with Austin at WM13.
Stan Hansen has an autobiography that was released in Japanese that is selling like crazy in Japan. Hansen is near the end of his career, but he's probably the most popular American wrestler in Japanese history and has been a top star there since the 70s. (Hansen had an English autobiography released in 2012 called The Last Outlaw. I'm not sure if it's the same book translated to English or if there's another one out there in Japanese from 12 years earlier).
NOAH will hold tournaments early next year to crown their first heavyweight, tag team, and junior heavyweight champions.
Shinya Hashimoto was pulled out of upcoming NJPW shows because they're apparently doing an angle where he is starting his own promotion, in order to do a feud with NJPW (turns out this wasn't an angle at all. Hashimoto really did get fired from NJPW around this time and started Pro Wrestling Zero-One. The real story there is murky and no one seems to know for sure exactly what led to his firing. I think he ended up doing one or two more matches for NJPW over the next year or so, but otherwise, this is the end of Hashimoto in NJPW).
Dave recently had a chance to read the book "Bodyslams!" by former WCW ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta and liked it. It's not better than Mick Foley's book or anything, but Dave gives it credit for accuracy. Mostly it glosses over a lot of the scandalous stuff and is more about Cappetta's personal experiences rather than giving much detail on what was happening in the business at the time. Dave thinks the book could have gone into more detail on the things going on behind the scenes in WCW during pivotal periods like when Jim Herd, Kip Frey, or Bill Watts was in charge. Overall, definitely better than The Rock's farce of a book but still lacking what made Foley's and Dynamite Kid's books so fascinating.
Steve Allen, the famous comedian and first ever host of the Tonight Show, died last week at age 78. This is only relevant here because most recently, Allen has been one of the lead spokespeople for the PTC and has been one of the most vocal opponents of WWF programming. Ironically enough, early in his career, Allen worked on TV as a wrestling announcer in the 1950s, though he never took it seriously, and in 1990, he appeared at Wrestlemania 6.
The documentary "Gaea Girls", which is about a young woman trying to get into Japanese women's wrestling, has been winning some awards and been admitted to some film festivals.
"Walker: Texas Ranger" this week did an episode loosely based on Owen Hart's death. It's about a wrestler, in costume, who fell from the ceiling during a show. Although in the case of this show, it was a murder ordered by a ruthless promoter trying to take over the territory of another promoter, who's a kind, older guy. The obvious parallels were a more evil version of Vince McMahon and a gentler version of Stu Hart. Dave thought the episode sucked and also got really sad by it. Dave says he hasn't watched Over The Edge again since Owen's death and seeing it fictionally re-enacted for a TV show was really depressing.
Scott Hall was arrested this week for probation violation while he was already in court for a child custody hearing. This charge stems from some 1998 case where he keyed up a limo outside a strip club in Orlando. At the time, Hall had been given probation and ordered to complete a bunch of community service by April of 2000. He never completed the community service, so....probation violation. Hall was in court with his estranged wife Dana and he filed for sole custody of their 2 children, claiming Dana is "emotionally and mentally unstable and an unfit parent" but then Hall got arrested at the courthouse and the hearing was postponed. Speaking of, Dana herself has had 2 contempt-of-court charges against her recently for refusing to let Hall have visitation with their kids when she was supposed to.
PPV news: CMLL in Mexico is holding a big year end show in December and are negotiating for it to air on PPV in the U.S., which would be the first Lucha Libre PPV to air here since When Worlds Collide in 1994. And remember a few months back when a promoter in Australia brought in Dennis Rodman and a bunch of other kinda big name stars and ran a show? Well it will also air on PPV in the U.S. and Canada and Mexico next month. That show was headlined by Rodman vs. Curt Hennig which ended in a double-count out because apparently Rodman refused to do the job. Word is that show was terrible, like this year's version of Heroes of Wrestling, but Australia is so starved for live wrestling that the crowd heat was still off-the-charts.
Juventud Guerrera worked an indie show in Puerto Rico and right now, he's trying to get hired in WWF, or at least stay out of trouble long enough to get rehired by WCW. Guerrera has reached out to WWF through friends he has there, but after what happened with him last month in Australia, WWF apparently isn't interested.
The latest OVW show saw Nick Dinsmore win the OVW title from Rob Conway. On the same show, Brock Lesnar wrestled a dark match against former UFC fighter Ron Waterman. Lesnar won and hey, who knows, maybe he's got a future in beating up UFC fighters.
Ted Dibiase and Nikita Koloff are on a church tour together where they wrestle matches against each other and then preach sermons or something.
The lines between wrestling and MMA got blurrier this week when Atsushi Onita went to the PRIDE offices and met with their promoter. Onita then issued a challenge to Antonio Inoki for a match, saying he wants to retire (of course) and his last match has to be with Inoki. PRIDE officials put out a statement saying they wouldn't promote one of Onita's exploding barbed wire matches, but that they would gladly promote Inoki vs. Onita under PRIDE rules in their ring. Inoki responded, telling reporters that he's retired. There's rumor that Onita will be appearing at Inoki's New Year's Eve show to set up some kind of angle.
Paul Heyman and Sabu have a court date scheduled for later this month over their issues. If you remember, Sabu left ECW to go try to go to WCW but his contract prevented it. Heyman then sued Sabu for breach of contract when he started working other shows (particularly for XPW). Meanwhile, Sabu has also filed some legal paperwork to try to get out of his contract, so hopefully that will all be settled soon.
Speaking of ECW, there doesn't seem to be anything new happening on the TV front. Negotiations with USA have apparently stalled. So....not great news. The latest episode of ECW Hardcore TV shows the signs of how things are going. The in-ring action was good but the show is beginning to look more and more low-budget by the week, as the company continues struggling to stay afloat. The announcers weren't flown in (it was dubbed in later in post-production) and the lighting was terrible.
Still nothing new on the sale of WCW but rumors are flying like crazy because everyone is paranoid. For the first time, in an interview, Linda McMahon acknowledged that it's true that WWF is in discussions to purchase WCW but word is no substantial progress has been made yet.
Notes from Nitro: it was a sad episode because the crowd was tiny and it almost felt like a bad indie show, especially because the small crowd was pretty dead. It was a disaster, with a total of 1,454 fans in the building and only 768 of them paid. Even worse, they tried to paper it but only 33% of the free tickets that were given out were used. WCW literally can't even give this shit away. Ric Flair returned as the new CEO of WCW and got almost no pop at all from the crowd, then cut a boring promo. Dave thinks it's sad that this is where things have gotten for him. The greatest of all time, cutting middling promos in front of a small crowd for a dying company. Then Jarrett came out to talk and the mic went dead. The fans chanted for Scott Hall all through the Kronik/Palumbo & Stasiak match. Kevin Nash was on commentary but after last week, he was finally ordered to stop talking about Hall. So instead of mentioning Hall himself, when the crowd started chanting, Nash kept asking, "What are they chanting?" but the other announcers wouldn't acknowledge him.
Thunder was taped immediately after Nitro and the only notable thing there was a Lance Storm vs. Norman Smiley match that was apparently so bad that Storm went on his website afterward and pre-emptively apologized to the fans for the match. As of press time, it hasn't aired yet so I guess we'll see (the 2000 Thunders aren't on the Network and I can't find this online, so no idea how bad it was or wasn't).
Backstage morale in WCW isn't great, which probably goes without saying. Word is much of the crew, wrestlers and backstage employees alike, are so drained by all the negativity and sale rumors that everyone has pretty much mentally quit. They're all just going through the motions every week now while waiting to see what's going to happen with their jobs.
Buff Bagwell did an interview with the Observer website a few days before the Halloween Havoc PPV and had plenty of interesting things to say. He ripped on Vince Russo for the way he booked himself along with guys like Luger and DDP and basically just how awful Russo's booking is. He also complained about WCW fining people for showing up late. He complained about not getting a big raise like everyone else got back in 1998 because he was out with a neck injury when Bischoff was giving raises and complained about being underpaid compared to all the other "A-talent" like himself. Talked about how screwed up WCW is, saying Lex Luger is being paid $1.3 million a year to do jobs for Hugh Morrus. "Are you kidding me? Hugh is a great guy and all that, but he's not A-talent. I love him to death, but he's never going to draw a dime. We're talking about drawing money and he's never going to draw a fuckin' dime. And Luger is putting him over at house shows? Nothing is adding up. I know for a fact that if they try to get me to job for (David) Flair at Havoc, I'm going to walk out the door. I'm not doing it." In response to all this, WCW put Hugh Morrus over big on Nitro while they had Bagwell job to Luger in 2 minutes on the same show. Well, at least someone in WCW gets punished for the shit they say.

A comprehensive guide (with pictures) of the Monaco GP and an intro to the ticketing world.
Hey guys, I started noticing some of you guys are PMing me more and more often regarding Monaco and the tickets/grandstands for the F1 GP therefore I decided to write up some lines that I hope may help you in your choice. For an optimal viewing experience of this post I recommend you downloading the free Chrome or Firefox extension Imagus. Notice I am in no way affiliated to F1 or any ticketing site anymore therefore you won’t find any affiliate links or referrals or whatever. Do you research, compare prices yourself and if you have any doubts regarding a website legitimacy don’t hesitate to let me know. But first, a quick overview on the ticketing world: a common misconception is that Formula One Management aka FOM (the company based in London and responsible for the organization of the F1 GP, subsidiary of the Formula One Group) is the entity that manages the sales of tickets you buy online or at the track. They own F1.com and sell tickets via that website but the truth is they have very marginal control over the tickets’ business. The tracks (or better the ownership or the management of the tracks, most commonly referred to as “organizers”) are the one that build up grandstands, set prices, print and sell tickets. The official website of the track is in most of the cases the official website for the tickets, where tickets are sold at face value. Availability is in most cases reflected in real time, and when a tribune is full either it can be expanded in a new section or replenished because third party resellers return some of the tickets they optioned before the beginning of the season. Third party resellers instead are the game-definers of the industry. I won’t go into too much details right now as this is not the purpose of the post, but if this is a topic you would like to hear more about I am happy to create another post and describe in length how tickets are effectively commodities whose value fluctuates in the 12 months before the race and some other curious insights regarding the industry. Coming back to Monaco, the official organizer’s website isACM.MC. They have a small boutique in Rue Grimaldi and you can visit the lovely staff; they will give you an overview of the tickets which are left and show you prices. I won’t lie, this GP is uber-expensive and I am not sure it is in most cases worth the investment: general admission is pricey and generally not a wonderful pick to see the track, grandstands have small angles and screens are scarce. But you also come to Monaco for the atmosphere, the people around the small city that buzzes and thrives in a wonderful season. Personally, either I get my tickets for free or just go to the Irish pub and watch it there. Last year I was at the Red Bull energy station and it was an extremely fun experience, wish I could go back - maybe Red Bull sees this and sends me passes to go kiss Max on the forehead. Last year Thursday party. Let me start my “virtual” tour of the circuit from the starting grid - Sector X1 and X2 + Restaurants This is a view from the garages and facing where the grandstands will be positioned. All along the way there are restaurants with little private tribunes. On this boulevard there are also most of the apartment buildings you may be seeing on sale. This is one of the very few races in which I do not recommend getting a ticket on the starting grid. the reason why I say so is that while you get all the action of the preparation on Sunday and you can see your heroes and fancy celebrities from close-up, you won’t be able to see much else on the rest of the day and weekend. Seats in X1 and X2 sections do not have a screen and therefore you will only be able to glimpse a few seconds to the car passing by at crazy speeds. You won’t know what is happening on the track on the other side and would have to only rely on the live commentary (done for this purpose in Monaco). Consider that for Monaco you won’t also be able to see the pits, as they are located facing the Rascasse complex and therefore you will only be able to see the garage from behind and not the pit-stops. Also, fun fact is that Monaco cannot offer F1 Vision devices (don’t know if this changed, and apologies for that) because of privacy and data retention laws not being aligned with the EU. Restaurants like Planet Sushi, Edgar, Italiagliani may have small tribunes and fixed menus but not much changes. There are tons of restaurants all along the circuit offering menus and viewing spots and they range from less than 100 EUR from a brasserie to about 800-1000 or something. On the Albert I street you have the best and largest supermarket on this side of Monaco (Casino Supermarket - fitting name for the town but absolutely random as it’s a French chain) that sells affordable food and drinks, free sandwiches, sushi, pizza with no prices increase. Also 90% of tickets collection booths (F1.com and main resellers) are around rue Princess Antoinette which is in this area. We then move on to Saint Devote corner - here we find Sectors A1, A and Z1. This is a terrible picture of the section but they already put up the barriers so I couldn’t get past. This corner is one of those in which you find the most action on Sunday and you may witness cars getting out of the pit lane and joining the circuit, but no much more than that. There are no screens and you will only be able to see cars in this section. Sector Z1 is the general admission area inside the circuit and generally speaking one of those that sells the fastest. While it goes without saying that you should go early in the morning and secure a spot, the sector has a nice view of cars entering the Bureau de tabac and the pool complex. Check out this short video i took last year while inspecting the grandstand. Some pictures of the Z1 area from above too. This is were it will be created a closed pedestrian area with bars and entertainment. Very small but very close to the track. Climbing up to the Casino we arrive to probably the most iconic view of the circuit - Sector B Picture of the casino from the front, the grandstand will be facing this direction. The Casino grandstand is together with the V section the most expensive grandstands of the circuit. A “gold” pass for 3 days would set you to something like 1300 EUR (fun fact: I invented Gold/SilveTop sections and was the first to introduce them to the market but this is another story). In Monaco the Gold section of the grandstand is the top row - alongside the tickets you get a hat, lanyards, ticket holder, earplugs, some fancy bags, a private pit-walk (shared with rest of Gold holders) and some other small perks. The Silver section is the same thing but 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th row. They can also be privileged sections regardless of row, for example right top side of sector K1 in the pool complex. The B grandstand has great view on the cars, you have a screen and easy access, while i heard you don’t have many toilets. Around there are the Cafe de Paris and the Louis XV with fixed menus and terraces to watch the race). I recommend it if you won’t end up in the low section and if you have cash to spare. My suggestion is always to stay here at least on Thursday when it’s cheaper and then move to top T sector (my favorite) for the race. Passing the Fairmont hotel famous hairpin - they got good seats if you are staying at the hotel on the roof or if you have a room - you end at the entrance of the tunnel in Sector C. Here is an idea of the rooms overlooking the hairpin. And here a view from the C grandstand. Just as A and A1, you see some action and you may end up seeing some battles but you won’t have a screen and you are pretty much isolated from the rest of the circuit. You are also super far away from the rest of the track so plan ahead distances! I have seen tons of people missing the race because they thought they could get to the train station and then back to sector C after having collected their tickets half an hour before the race. Allow 1 hour to walk end to end, and expect tons of lines everywhere, especially at elevators in the central station. You will find me in this section with a booked table at the Irish pub, away from the casuals. Going through the tunnel you will find another chicane for which you can’t buy tickets (only journalists there) and soon enter the Bureau de Tabac, Sector K1 to K6 or 8. This is what cars see when coming out of the tunnel and past the chicane, about to enter the complex. And this is the complex. I say 6 or 8 as sometimes they open additional sectors according to demand. This is an example of sector to avoid, the very last one. Despite what you see online, Monaco is never sold out; the day of the race DO NOT GO TO STREET SELLERS for any reason, always go to the official boutique, you will find tickets which went unsold and that got reopened. Street seller can literally just photo-copy the ticket and sell it to you as they don’t have scanners or barcodes in Monaco therefore access control is a mess and you will end up fist fighting on the grandstand. There was an old trick in Monaco GA exploited for years that allowed people to get tens of friends in the stand without paying but I don’t want to give you rascal any ideas. Sector K1 in the upper section is definitely the best solution, but it’s far from being perfect. The screen is on top of the hill and just like 90% of Monaco grandstands it is not wheelchair accessible and doesn’t have a cover. This means if weather is extremely hot or it rains you won’t have shelter. Also, umbrellas are sold but forbidden on grandstands, gotta buy a poncho. Sections in the lower rows are also very good as when car do the “curve” they get very close to the barriers and if you are too high you won’t be able to see them. They are building a parking underneath and they are changing a lot of the layout I am used to, therefore be careful and ask the organizer. Here a panoramic shot to make you understand how far it is. It is readable but you will have to squint your eyes a bit. On the way from the tunnel to the K section you will see lots of yachts docked there. If you have the finances that allow you to book a viewing spot on a yacht, this is where you will most likely be docked (be it F1 Experiences with lunch at the Maree restaurant, private owner or in my case the owner of the YAS Marina circuit’s yacht). For yachts I always mention same thing to everybody: you go there to get drunk, to clumsy flirt on models, to hang out with celebrities and celebrity-wannabe, maybe be offered a drink to Raikkonen’s friends, but certainly not to watch the race. The cars go insanely fast in this part of the track and you will only glimpse at them. Here is the yacht section just after the Yacht Club. Here is a pic I took last year after the race at the traditional’s Thursday panel aboard Yas Marina's owner's yacht. Sector M deserves a special mention as perhaps the worst of the whole circuit, since it is very low and you basically don’t see the screen. This is usually reserved for relatives of the organizers or special guests which don’t make it to the main tower where the royal family is. Where the danger sign is there will be the grandstand. You then enter my favorite grandstand for Saturday, the N - O - P pool complex. Here is a side view of the complex. I say it’s my favorite on Saturday as from the top of O section you may see both the entrance of the pool and the exit. You will have a nice screen to watch the race and you will be able to get there via a narrow bridge in the harbor. The sun will be in front of you so watch out and bring a hat. This is the view facing the grandstand. You will then see on the right the L sector and the T sector on the right. Please please do not take low seats! The T and L sections (especially T1) have a great view of the pits and if you are too low you will be below the roof of the Brasserie de Monaco and won’t be able to see any action. You will have a screen but will only see cars when they will be 2 meters from you. My pick is highest section of T1 sector, the best in terms of price and what you get out of it. If you manage and can afford, check that. If you can afford even more, go to Belvedere which is the hospitality of the circuit. L sector, you may also notice they are building the Belvedere on top. This a panoramic view of the Brasserie and L sectors. And this is the T1 section. Before getting to the Rascasse section, a special mention to the Paddock Club in Monaco. Being one of the most expensive on the calendar, you would expect crazy facilities, stunning services and entertainment and a crazy good position. Which I am not saying you find, but you need to consider that compared to other circuits the Paddock Club is NOT located on the main straight and not even directly on the track. I have been to many Paddock Clubs as Monaco definitely has some issues with space while facilities and services are top notch. They lower the attendance to make it livable for everybody, but you are a bit far from the track and you will not have the best view of the cars once they go around the Rascasse. The company that takes care of the Paddock Club is called Do.Co. and they are very very nice people, the atmosphere is a bit stock up but considering the crowd they need to be flawless. BTW my favorite Paddock Club was Abu Dhabi! There is nothing now but imagine the Paddock Club to be placed here just behind the parking. Coming back to the Rascasse section, you have sector V and the Rascasse bar. The sector V is a very well located grandstand directly facing the last chicane, with a clear view of the grid and a screen in front of you. very expensive but you are very close and it’s very convenient to visit the pits when you will have your pit walk (only 2 and 3 days ticket holders usually can attend the pit walk). Section V from the side and pit entrance. The Rascasse instead usually get immediately fully booked as it has a very good location on the chicane (it IS the chicane) and very good food and drinks options. Expensive as you would expect, maybe check it out on Thursday as an alternative to sector B or to the lower end apartments (the price for an open-bar, canapè fueled terrace on Thursday is about 250 EUR). Rascasse building with terrace. And with the General Admission we terminate our ride. As mentioned before, not the best general admission area if it rains or if it’s overcrowded; don’t remember the exact number but capacity was greatly reduced in the last years for this reason. It is relatively affordable but hey, I guess you get to experience Monaco on a budget. Here some extra shots of the garage and panoramic shots of the rascasse complex. And here a link to a 4K video I shot some weeks ago without traffic. I hope above helped and should you be interested in receiving more tips regarding Monaco GP, as well as some other guides on tickets and insights of the industry, do not hesitate to ask! As mentioned I am not selling anything so don’t ask me for discount and stuff, I can only point you in the right direction and maybe save you some cash. Grand Prix 3 was probably the last F1 game I played with any reasonable length of time. I have clocked up a fair number of hours in GT and GT2 on the PlayStation and toyed around in Project Cars and a few hours with Dirt. So I am a bit of a racing newbie and, it must also be said, never drove those games without some level of assist. So, I bought myself a T300RS GT Wheel and pedals and a Steam copy of F1 2017 and set about trying to learn to race with any reasonable level of competency. I decided up front I would start by using most of the assists on while I learnt the tracks. I knew how the tracks looked from watching F1 but this doesn't translate very well for knowing which gear into which corner or where you should start braking etc. I also left the difficulty at 20 as I wasn't really sure where it should be for my level. I left race distance to 25% with 3 x 15 minute practice sessions and a single qualifying session. I signed up for a Williams drive as number 2 driver (sorry Lance!) Lesson 1: Australia Wasn't really sure what the practice session targets were so I mostly ignored them. I spent most of the time getting used to the wheel and pedals. Not sure how I managed it but even with most assists on I finished about 4th. But the wheel settings didn't feel right at all. I checked the settings and realised I should be running with 0% on the dampener. I also checked the rotation settings and realised I needed to up the saturation to around 73 to match the in game wheel. Much better. Lesson 2: China I wanted to get rid of some of the assists. Automatic gears was always something I relied on heavily in the past so I turned to manual gears and despite a few laps of forgetting gear changes I was surprised that I got used to them fairly quickly. After running the three practice sessions I wasn't thinking much about the gear changes at all and started to get used to getting the right gear for the right corner. Finished 1st! Lesson 3: Bahrain ABS and Pit assists were the next to go. I had some difficulty in getting used to having no ABS. It felt as though I had no braking up to the point of lockup. I practiced some more on Bahrain in time trial and played around with some of the settings a bit. I ended up moving the rubber brake mod closer to the pedal and adding 30 brake linearity. I adjusted the pedal a few more times until I was able to get the calibration to hit 100 with reasonable force on the pedal. I was able to start to get a feel for how much pedal was needed before locking the wheels but this took more practice that the automatic gears to get used to. I also turned the racing line to only show corners. Did the race like this and still finished 1st! Maybe I do need to up the difficulty? Lesson 4: Russia I had left the racing line on as I’m still getting used to tracks but I decided I would practice for a bit with the line fully off. My first few laps I just could not get it. How can you learn braking zones and what speed you can take certain corners at with no line to show you?! I checked a few videos of TRL Limitless where he pointed out the braking points, which gear to take and how much kerb, where to apex etc. and these were much more useful than I thought they would be. I practiced for a while for this track in TT until I was confident enough to start my practice sessions. Hitting the practice goals this time around wasn’t quite as easy but it was so much more rewarding! Went on to take the top podium again! Lesson 5: Spain Practice, practice, practice! More Youtube videos to find those elusive braking zones and turn in points. We are only running with medium traction now and the game feels much more involved. Whereas before I was able to follow a green line and brake when it went red now I’m looking for the meter markers, kerbs or scenery to know when I have to brake, how hard I can push out of the corners without running wide etc. Losing the racing line is probably one of the hardest assists to lose as you are learning the tracks but it’s true to say I found that with the line I was never actually learning the track. I am still missing the apex, still locking the wheels, spinning the car but not nearly as much as I thought I would be. Practicing in Time Trials is defiantly useful and I’ll usually run a track for about 30 minutes or so before I feel remotely confident to take it into practice. Over confidence is a thing tho and I lose the rear of the car coming out of turn 11 (?), drift across the track and Hamilton collects the front of my car, breaking my wheel off. I have disabled flashbacks and have damage set to reduced. So race over for me in Spain! I also make the choice to up the race length to 50% and do a 3 stage qualifying session. More track time = good! Lesson 6: Monaco (Trial by Water) I can now get around a track most of the time without collecting tyres, walls, spectators but as it’s by no means a sure thing I decide to turn damage off. If I’m going to crash at least I can try and finish the race! I start in time trial and learning Monaco was tough. I was used to having a decent run off area if I overcooked a turn a bit too much. Most of the track barriers around Monaco have pieces of Renault in them now. Back to the videos again, take it slowly at first then see if I can up the speed through that bend; should I run it slightly wider here or keep it tight. More practice. After the initial feeling of, “I’m never going to learn this track.” I started to feel more comfortable and moved into practice sessions. I tried the qualifying pace: failed. I tried the race strategy: failed. My best practice time was a 1:29 but typically I’m around 1:35 and that’s if I haven’t collected a wall somewhere which was still happening 1 in every 3 laps. Everyone has bad days so we forgot about practice and moved onto qualifying. I managed to get into Q3 but was struggling. I think I eventually qualified around 9th but went up to 5th due to grid penalties? Monaco did not go well. I managed to make 2 places on the first lap but chasing Kimi into the bend before the tunnel I screwed up and spun the car, blocking the road. After most of the cars went past I found myself in 19th and trying to make up time. And then it started to rain. Now I hadn’t actually raced in the wet yet. The team let me know the rain was here to stay but when I tried to get in for Intermediates they told me Massa was already in – go around again! I couldn’t keep the damn thing pointed in the right direction! This was a new level of learning. I finally got my tyre change and what followed was 29 more laps of the most gruelling time I had spent in F1 2017 so far. From spinning with too much power halfway through the tunnel, multiple penalties from not making the Nouvelle chicane or pin balling around Massenet and Casino. This was tough. On the plus side rain looks great in the game and I spend a lot of time admiring the way the road surface showed the forming puddles as my Williams graciously aquaplaned sideways across them! We finally limped across the line in 18th. And that’s where I am now in my F1 career. I’m gaining confidence with no assists although I have a way to go to actually be competent but I must admit the game is so much more rewarding because of it. Stressful too!! On to Canada!!
